Centre for Health and Society 10 year Anniversary Celebrations

The Centre celebrated its 10-year anniversary this year, with various activities organised on the 11 and 12 of March. On Tuesday 11, CHS staff met with invited speakers Professor Warwick H. Anderson, the inaugural director of the Centre, Professor Peter Skold from Umea University (Sweden) and Associate Professor Papaarangi Reid, Tumuaki Dean, The University of Auckland, to hear their perspectives on our activities. The session took the popular conversazione model, where participants informally introduce their work, followed by questions and discussion around the table. The theme for the anniversary celebration Looking back, looking forward: Rights, social inequalities and health provided a useful starting point for this discussion. The conversazione was followed by a delicious Vietnamese lunch in the hub and a second session for postgraduate students in the afternoon. On Wednesday 12, a well-attended symposium was held at Graduate House where our guests gave keynote addresses and Mr Mick Gooda, CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health, acted as discussant. Aunty Carolyn Briggs was invited to open the symposium and welcome guests to Country.

Also on 11 March, History, Art and Mystery: dispensing medicine in a Victorian Pharmacy,a stand alone video preview about the Savory and Moore Pharmacy, a working pharmacy in London from c.1849 up until 1968, and now situated at the Medical History Museum, was launched. The Museum is situated on level 2, Brownless Biomedical Library, The University of Melbourne. It also contains a display and exhibition of Rare Medical Books: The engraver’s hand in the medical text: Examples from the Rare Books Collection.
