Social Health Postgraduate Coursework Program

The social and political dimensions of health and illness present important challenges to health care practitioners, administrators and policy makers. The Centre for Health and Society is a multidisciplinary environment which offers opportunities to study health and illness drawing upon a variety of approaches from the humanities and social sciences. The Social Health Program allows students to investigate current issues and questions in health ethics, health care history, Aboriginal health, medical anthropology, health policy or an interdisciplinary social health program.

The Graduate Diploma in Social Health is a full coursework program designed to meet the needs of students who are new to social health. The Graduate Diploma in Social Health is designed for students who want to undertake study in Social Health but who do not necessarily have a background in this area. You can choose to enrol in one of the following streams: health ethics, health care history, Aboriginal health, medical anthropology or an interdisciplinary program . On completion of the Graduate Diploma, you will have gained a sophisticated understanding of the social context of health and illness and the social context of health care interventions. You will have gained the ability to evaluate critically and synthesise the relevant literature, develop analytical skills in identifying the social basis to problems in clinical, social and policy contexts, develop knowledge of relevant theories and be able to apply it to healthcare problems. You will also be able to apply the conceptual, theoretical and practical dimensions of the course to your own professional practice, be able to articulate knowledge and understanding of the area in oral and written form, as well as having a respect for intellectual integrity, and for the ethics of scholarship.

The Master of Social Health (Coursework/Minor thesis) is a coursework and minor thesis program designed for students who want both content knowledge and research training and experience in the area of social health. The Master of Social Health is designed for students who want to undertake coursework in Social Health as well as obtaining research training with the opportunity of undertaking a minor thesis. You can choose to enrol in one of the following streams: health ethics, Aboriginal health, medical anthropology, health policy or an interdisciplinary program . On completion of the Master of Social Health you should have a sophisticated understanding of the conceptual approaches within the social study of health, illness and health care and have knowledge of relevant theories and be able to apply it to social health problems. You will be able to critically evaluate and synthesise the relevant literature and have developed analytical skills in identifying the basis to problems in clinical and social contexts. The course will provide you with the skills to apply the conceptual, theoretical and practical dimensions of the course in your own professional practice. In addition, you will have an understanding of the principles and processes of research design, have developed a respect for intellectual integrity, and for the ethics of research and scholarship, have identified research issues and formulated research questions, as well as have designed and conducted research at the level of a minor thesis.

The Graduate Diploma in Social Health and Master of Social Health can be undertaken in full time or part time mode. There is a mid year entry in addition to the beginning of the year entry.
